Delhi Police Detain Rahul Gandhi, Opposition Leaders During March to Election Commission.

A protest march by opposition leaders against the Election Commission’s alleged bias towards the ruling BJP ended in mass detentions Monday, with Delhi Police taking senior INDIA bloc figures, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sanjay Raut, Akhilesh Yadav, and Priyanka Chaturvedi, into custody.

The leaders were marching from Parliament to the EC’s office to submit a memorandum when police blocked the route, citing lack of permission. Officials said only 30 MPs had approval to visit the EC, but more than 200 turned up. Some leaders attempted to jump barricades, prompting police action.

“This fight is not political… it is to save the Constitution. The fight is for ‘one person, one vote’,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters before being taken away. The protestors accused the EC of colluding with the BJP to manipulate voter lists in states like Bihar, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

The trigger for Monday’s march was the “special intensive revision” of Bihar’s voter list ahead of upcoming polls, which opposition leaders claim is aimed at disenfranchising their voter base. The matter is already in the Supreme Court, which allowed the revision but asked the EC to ensure no genuine voters are excluded.

The EC has rejected all allegations, calling its process transparent and challenging Rahul Gandhi to produce evidence in a signed affidavit. The BJP has slammed the protest as “political theatre” and accused the Congress of trying to “malign a constitutional body.”

Tensions spilled into Parliament as well, with disruptions forcing adjournments until 2 pm. The BJP maintains that voter roll revisions are routine, while opposition leaders have vowed to intensify their agitation.
