Residents of Delhi and the wider Delhi-NCR woke up to light rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, bringing relief from rising temperatures across the region. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the capital, warning of moderate rainfall, gusty winds and lightning.

The temperature recorded at Safdarjung Observatory — the city’s base station — was 22°C as of 7:30 am. The drizzle was accompanied by gusty winds, lightning and a mild chill in the air, offering residents some respite from the heat.

Orange alert in Delhi and Ghaziabad, yellow in Noida

An orange alert has been declared for Delhi and Ghaziabad, while a yellow alert has been issued for nearby Noida.

According to the IMD, the alert indicates light to moderate rainfall with maximum surface wind speeds of less than 40 kmph.

Season’s first pre-monsoon rain

Mahesh Palawat, vice president of meteorology and climate change at Skymet Weather, told Press Trust of India that parts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi may receive rain over the next two days.

He said a western disturbance approaching the western Himalayas has triggered cyclonic activity over central Pakistan bordering Punjab and Haryana, likely bringing rainfall to the region. The system could mark the season’s first pre-monsoon rain, arriving about 10 days earlier than usual.

The IMD said the minimum temperature could range between 14°C and 16°C by Monday, while the maximum is expected to remain around 31°C to 33°C.
