Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav Power India to Record-Breaking Win Over New Zealand

Ishan Kishan’s explosive 76 off 32 balls and Suryakumar Yadav’s first T20I fifty in 23 innings helped India crush New Zealand by 7 wickets in the second T20I at Raipur on Friday, January 23, taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

India chased 209 in just 15.2 overs, setting a new world record for the fastest chase of a 200-plus total by a full-member nation, surpassing Pakistan’s 16-over chase against New Zealand in 2025. It was also India’s first successful 200+ run chase under coach Gautam Gambhir.

  • Record-Breaking Chase (200+ Target, Full-Member Nations)
  • India vs New Zealand, Raipur, 2026: 28 balls remaining
  • Pakistan vs New Zealand, Auckland, 2025: 24 balls remaining
  • Australia vs West Indies, Basseterre, 2025: 23 balls remaining

Kishan’s Carnage
India stumbled early, reduced to 8/2 in two overs as Sanju Samson survived a lucky reprieve but fell soon after, and Abhishek Sharma fell first ball. But Kishan took charge, tearing into Zak Foulkes for 24 runs in his first over, including three boundaries and a six. He reached fifty in just 21 balls, putting India on course for a historic chase. He was eventually dismissed for 76, but the result was never in doubt.

SKY Back in Form
Suryakumar Yadav ended a 468-day wait for a T20I fifty, scoring an unbeaten 82 off 37 balls. He accelerated in the ninth over, hitting boundaries and a six off Foulkes. Alongside Shivam Dube, SKY added 81 runs, keeping the pressure firmly on New Zealand and steering India to a convincing victory.

New Zealand’s Missed Opportunities
The Blackcaps got off to a flying start with Devon Conway and Tim Seifert scoring 43 off 20 balls. Rachin Ravindra showed promise at No.3, but the team failed to capitalize on good starts. Mitchell Santner’s captaincy came under scrutiny for holding back key overs for Matt Henry, and his dropped catch of Suryakumar in the 14th over effectively sealed New Zealand’s fate. Kuldeep Yadav’s two wickets provided some resistance, but Santner’s 47 off 27 was not enough to prevent India’s record-breaking chase.

India’s combination of fearless batting and aggressive intent proved unstoppable, leaving New Zealand scrambling and India celebrating a historic win.
