Rajgir Rising: Fans Drive City’s Push to Become a Sports Hub.

“Sports is nothing without fans.” In India, that line rings truer than anywhere else, where teams and leagues thrive on the passion of their supporters. The Men’s Asia Cup in Rajgir has shown exactly that — a small city, best known for its hills and Nalanda University, proving it can host big-ticket international events with enthusiastic crowds.

Despite the scorching heat and humidity, fans have turned out in large numbers to support the teams. Earlier in August, the Emirates U20 Rugby Championships also drew impressive attendance, and now the Asia Cup is carrying that energy forward.

Fans Who Won’t Miss Out

Shekhar, a banker, admitted he skipped work to watch the matches.
“I got the right chance to turn up, so I decided to come in,” he said.

For Nalanda University students Shejuti and Emon from Bangladesh, the excitement was personal. With Bangladesh replacing Pakistan in the tournament, they finally had the chance to cheer for their home team live.
“We missed the women’s hockey tournament earlier because we weren’t aware of it. This time, Bangladesh came and we didn’t want to miss it. Bangladesh should win this one,” Emon said.

Their wish came true as Bangladesh beat Chinese Taipei 8-3 on August 30 to keep their Super 4 hopes alive. But for the duo, the bigger dream is seeing more sports — and even the Bangladesh cricket team — in Rajgir once the new stadium is ready.
“The Bihar government is taking initiative. In two or three years, we may see bigger events,” added Shejuti.

Metro-Level Thrill in Rajgir

Local fan Mohammed Shahbaz said seeing international stars in his hometown was something he had only associated with bigger cities.
“These are events I thought I would only watch in Delhi or Mumbai. Now, I get the same thrill in Rajgir,” he said.

Shahbaz credited Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for his role in transforming Rajgir into a sports destination.
“Without him, this would not have been possible. His contribution is very big,” he added.

The Road Ahead

For fans, this is just the start. With a new cricket stadium in the pipeline and steady government support, Rajgir is emerging as more than just an educational hub.

“Rajgir will emerge as a sports hub. As an education hub, it was already well known with Nalanda University. Now, sports will add a new identity,” said Shekhar.

The Asia Cup may be underway, but for Rajgir’s fans, the bigger victory is the city’s growing reputation as a stage for international sport — one they hope will only get bigger from here.
