NDA–TVK Tie-Up Buzz Fizzles Out After Rajinikanth Row

Talks of a possible alliance between the BJP-led NDA and actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls have hit a roadblock, following a controversy over remarks targeting superstar Rajinikanth.

The backlash to comments made by TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna has drawn strong reactions from both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, effectively cooling any momentum around a potential alliance. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Rajinikanth himself have not responded so far.

From Backchannel Talks to Breakdown

Speculation over a tie-up had intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting the NDA had reached out to TVK with a generous seat-sharing offer and a Deputy Chief Minister’s post. There were also claims that Vijay was seeking the Chief Minister’s role—though TVK publicly denied any such negotiations.

The buzz peaked during Vijay’s recent visit to Delhi in connection with a CBI probe, but the latest controversy appears to have derailed any progress.

Political Leaders Rally Behind Rajinikanth

The turning point came when Aadhav Arjuna claimed Rajinikanth stepped away from politics due to pressure—remarks that triggered sharp criticism across parties. AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami called the comments inappropriate, stressing that Rajinikanth’s decision to stay out of politics must be respected.

BJP leader K Annamalai also dismissed the claims, highlighting the superstar’s long-standing influence and resilience.

State Heads for Multi-Cornered Contest

With alliance talks losing steam, Tamil Nadu is now set for a four-way contest. The DMK is aiming to retain power, while the AIADMK—back in alliance with the BJP—seeks a comeback. Vijay’s TVK is preparing for its electoral debut, hoping to leverage his popularity and follow the path of leaders like C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran.

Actor-politician Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi remains the fourth key player, setting up a closely fought electoral battle.
