Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana To Have 33-Minute Shorter Cut For China

Ranbir Kapoor’s highly anticipated Ramayana will reportedly have different versions for India and China, with the Chinese release set to be around 33 minutes shorter. According to a report citing a source, the changes are linked to China’s strict film censorship rules, particularly regulations concerning religious themes, superstition and content that could conflict with the country’s policies.

Since Ramayana draws heavily from the ancient Indian epic and features several devotional elements, the makers are reportedly preparing a shorter cut to meet Chinese regulatory requirements before the film’s release.

Why Is China Getting A Different Version?

The China release, reportedly titled Ramayana: The Legend of the Prince, could also provide an opportunity for Indian cinema to reconnect with Chinese audiences.

Hindi films once enjoyed a strong following in China, with movies such as PK, Dangal, Secret Superstar and Andhadhun finding success there. However, the release of Indian films in the country was significantly affected by tensions between India and China following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

The source reportedly said that the film’s release could help renew Chinese interest in Indian cinema, although its religious and devotional elements have prompted changes to the version intended for the market.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana: What We Know

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Yash as Ravana.

The film’s trailer introduces Ravana’s growing power and Lord Vishnu’s decision to take the avatar of Ram to restore balance. The story then follows Ram’s marriage to Sita and their eventual 14-year exile, accompanied by Sita and Lakshman.

The narrative moves towards Sita’s abduction by Ravana and the ensuing battle between good and evil.

The ambitious project is being made in two parts. The first film is scheduled to release during Diwali 2026, while the second instalment is planned for Diwali 2027.
