Rapper Tommy Genesis Faces Outrage Over Religious Imagery in Music Video.
Indian-origin rapper Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, known professionally as Tommy Genesis, is facing intense backlash following the release of her latest music video True Blue. The video, which recently went viral, features the Canadian rapper dressed in blue body paint, adorned with gold jewelry and a red bindi — a look many viewers interpreted as resembling a Hindu goddess.
In addition to the Hindu-inspired visuals, the video includes scenes where she uses a Christian cross in provocative ways. One controversial moment shows her licking the cross and holding it near her backside — a move that has drawn criticism from both Hindu and Christian communities.
Online users quickly reacted, calling the imagery offensive and accusing the rapper of disrespecting religious sentiments for the sake of attention. “Her Indian heritage makes this feel intentional — like a deliberate attempt to provoke,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). Another wrote, “The use of the cross is blatantly disrespectful. This isn’t art, it’s mockery.”
Several people labeled the video as “blasphemous” and a “cheap stunt” designed to go viral. Others called on streaming platforms to take action, arguing that the content was deeply hurtful to faith communities.
As of now, Tommy Genesis has not issued any public response to the controversy.
Born in Vancouver to a Tamil father and Swedish mother, Genesis is known for her edgy, experimental style that often explores themes of identity, gender, and sexuality. She has previously referred to herself as a “fetish rapper,” and in 2016, was dubbed “the internet’s most rebellious underground rap queen” by international media.
While her work has frequently pushed artistic boundaries, critics say the True Blue video crosses a line by trivializing sacred symbols. The debate continues online, with many questioning the balance between creative expression and cultural respect.
