What was meant to be a celebratory finale to a historic school anniversary in Bangladesh descended into chaos late Friday night.

After a mob attacked a concert by legendary rock musician James, forcing organisers to cancel the show and leaving at least 20 people injured.

James, popularly known as Nagar Baul and widely regarded as Bangladesh’s most influential rock musician, was scheduled to perform at a cultural programme marking the 185th anniversary of Faridpur Zilla School. The concert, attended by thousands of students and alumni, was called off minutes before it was due to begin after attackers stormed the venue, hurled bricks and attempted to seize the stage.

Violence erupts before showtime

According to officials and eyewitnesses, James was set to take the stage around 9:30 pm on the school campus in Faridpur district when a group of outsiders tried to force their way into the venue. When security personnel and organisers stopped them, the group turned violent.

Bricks and stones were thrown towards the stage and the audience, triggering panic across the grounds. Most of those injured were students standing near the front of the venue. Several sustained head and limb injuries after being struck by brickbats.

Students reportedly resisted the attackers and eventually managed to push them back from the campus amid tense scenes.

Concert cancelled on administrative orders

As the situation worsened, the district administration intervened. Around 10 pm, Dr Mostafizur Rahman Shamim, convener of the organising committee, announced from the stage that the concert was being cancelled on the instructions of the Faridpur district administration, citing law-and-order concerns.

James narrowly escaped amid the chaos and was escorted away under security cover. No injuries to the artist or his band members were reported.

Rajibul Hasan Khan, convener of the anniversary programme’s publicity and media sub-committee, said organisers had completed all preparations for the concert but were left shocked by the sudden outbreak of violence. He said between 15 and 25 students were injured after being hit by stones and bricks.

“We still do not know who carried out the attack or why. We had no option but to stop the programme to prevent further violence,” he said.

Opposition to cultural events alleged

Local accounts suggested the attackers opposed the holding of music and cultural programmes and demanded that such events be stopped. While authorities have not officially confirmed the identities or affiliations of those involved, the incident has triggered concern over growing intolerance towards cultural activities in parts of the country.

Police maintained a heavy presence in the area after the cancellation, and the situation was brought under control later in the night. There was no immediate confirmation of arrests.

Anniversary celebrations cut short

The concert was the concluding event of a two-day programme celebrating 185 years of Faridpur Zilla School, one of the region’s oldest government institutions, established in 1840 during British rule.

The celebrations began on Thursday with the hoisting of national and commemorative flags, the national anthem, oath-taking ceremonies and a colourful procession through the town. Friday night’s schedule included cultural performances, a raffle draw and James’ much-anticipated appearance—an event that ultimately never took place.
