Sabalenka Reaches US Open Semifinals After Vondrousova Withdraws with Knee Injury.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka has advanced to the US Open semifinals after Marketa Vondrousova withdrew from their quarterfinal due to a knee injury. The 2023 Wimbledon champion had impressed with wins over Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina but pulled up during practice on Tuesday.

“I tried my best to take the court today, but during warm-up I felt my knee again,” Vondrousova said. “After consulting with the tournament doctor, I decided not to risk aggravating the injury. I apologise to fans and appreciate all the support.”

World No. 1 Sabalenka expressed her sympathy on Instagram, praising Vondrousova’s performances and wishing her a speedy recovery. Sabalenka becomes the third woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam semifinal via walkover, joining Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Fabiola Zuluaga.

Sabalenka will face American Jessica Pegula in Thursday’s semifinals, a rematch of last year’s final.
