Sanjay Dutt Filmed For Welcome To The Jungle Before Being Replaced By Suniel Shetty, Reveals Ahmed Khan
Sanjay Dutt was originally set to be part of Welcome To The Jungle and had even completed two days of filming before exiting the project.
Now, director Ahmed Khan has revealed that the actor’s departure was driven entirely by scheduling conflicts, paving the way for Suniel Shetty to take over the role. Ahmed dismissed speculation surrounding the casting change, saying the character remained exactly as originally conceived despite the switch.
‘We Couldn’t Keep Adjusting’
According to the director, Sanjay Dutt had already begun shooting when repeated date clashes disrupted the production schedule.
“It was always written this way. That was always the plan. In the beginning, when we announced the film, Sanjay Dutt shot for two days. But there were so many date issues. Baba had to go away for a whole month,” Ahmed said.
He added that Sanjay made repeated efforts to rearrange his commitments, but the filmmakers eventually decided it would be unfair to keep asking him to alter his schedule.
“Then the second time, another little issue happened, and he said, ‘I will shift my dates again.’ Then we felt guilty and said, ‘Baba, we can’t make you shift your schedule.’ Then he said, ‘How much will you guys adjust for me?’ So we had to let go of certain things. The show must go on,” Ahmed recalled.
The director also revealed that the transition was handled with complete mutual respect.
“Sanju told Suniel, ‘You do my role,’ and Suniel told Jackie Shroff, ‘You do my role.’ That just shows everybody wanted this film to happen,” he said.
Why Suniel Shetty Was Chosen
Ahmed said casting Suniel Shetty allowed the team to organically build on one of the actor’s most loved on-screen personas.
“As for Anna (Suniel Shetty), organically, Suniel Shetty’s name has Shetty, so it fits perfectly with the character name. And he took the traits from Awara Paagal Deewana,” he explained.
In Welcome To The Jungle, Suniel plays the brother of Uday Shetty, the iconic gangster portrayed by Nana Patekar in the earlier Welcome films. Ahmed said the film intentionally incorporates familiar references to Suniel’s “Yeda Anna” image to give longtime fans a nostalgic callback while remaining true to the franchise’s comic universe.
