With the announcement of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, discussions have emerged around Sanju Samson’s role in the T20I side.
The return of Shubman Gill as vice-captain has raised questions about who will open the batting during the tournament. However, Samson’s mentor, Raiphi Gomez, remains unfazed and confident in the wicketkeeper-batter’s adaptability. He highlighted that Samson is capable of adjusting to different positions in the batting order if needed.
“Sanju is a professional and internationally established player. He is flexible enough to bat down the order if required. His confidence and adaptability guide him,” said Gomez, former Kerala and Pondicherry all-rounder.
Gomez added that external speculation does not affect Samson’s mindset:
“Sanju has not expressed any pressure. The talk around his role is outside noise. Our focus is on helping him keep improving with the bat. He is fully focused on his job for India.”
Form and Fitness
Earlier this year, concerns were raised following Samson’s struggles against England’s pace in the T20I series and his lack of rhythm during the IPL due to injuries.
Gomez confirmed that those challenges are behind him:
“The England T20Is were part of the game, which every cricketer experiences. After his IPL injury, he spent time at the BCCI Centre of Excellence to regain fitness. Now, he is in good rhythm, performing well in KCL matches.”
Samson’s versatility and regained form make him a key asset for India in the Asia Cup, ready to adapt his batting position according to team requirements.
