Supreme Court Moves to Reclaim Former CJI Chandrachud’s Official Bungalow.

In an unprecedented action, the Supreme Court administration has formally requested the Union government to reclaim Bungalow No. 5 on Krishna Menon Marg—the official residence of the Chief Justice—currently occupied by former CJI Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud.

A July 1 letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (‘MoHUA’) states that Chandrachud’s permitted stay, initially granted until May 31, 2025, along with a six‑month extension under Rule 3B, which expired May 10, has lapsed. The administration urged immediate repossession of the Type VIII residence.

Though his successors opted not to relocate, Chandrachud remains in the residence eight months post-retirement (he demitted office in November 2024). In response, Chandrachud cited personal exigencies—ongoing renovation of newly allotted quarters and his daughters’ special medical needs—as reasons for the delay. He assured that he would vacate “within a few days,” emphasizing the cooperative tone of his communication with court officials.
