Trump Names Close Aide Sergio Gor as US Ambassador to India.
President Donald Trump on Friday nominated his close political aide Sergio Gor as the United States ambassador to India, also assigning him the role of special envoy for South and Central Asia. The appointment comes amid heightened US-India tensions over tariffs and India’s engagement with Russia and China.
Gor, 38, rose quickly in Republican politics and became a key White House aide under Trump, responsible for vetting thousands of presidential appointees and overseeing staff changes in the National Security Council. Though influential, Gor has limited prior foreign policy experience.
Trump praised Gor on Truth Social, writing: “For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador.”
Born in Uzbekistan and raised in Malta, Gor later attended university in the US and worked with Senator Rand Paul before joining Trump as a fundraiser and director of presidential personnel. He oversaw the filling of nearly 95% of presidential appointments and will remain in this role until Senate confirmation.
Political observers note that Trump has relied on close aides rather than career diplomats for major ambassadorial posts, a trend seen in his administration. Past US ambassadors to India have included distinguished intellectuals such as John Kenneth Galbraith and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, while Biden appointed former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio endorsed the nomination on X, calling Gor “an excellent representative of America in one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.”
