Shanaka Apologises to Fans After Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2026 Exit
Captain Dasun Shanaka has issued an emotional appeal to supporters after Sri Lanka national cricket team were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026, urging them not to abandon faith in the team. Sri Lanka’s campaign ended on Wednesday with a heavy 61-run defeat to New Zealand national cricket team at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium. The result dashed their semifinal hopes and extended a worrying trend — this is now the fifth consecutive T20 World Cup in which Sri Lanka have failed to reach the last four.
Early Promise Fades Away
The tournament began on a positive note for the co-hosts. Despite entering the World Cup on the back of a 3-0 warm-up series defeat to the England cricket team, Sri Lanka responded impressively with three straight wins.
However, momentum slipped at a crucial stage, and key defeats ultimately derailed their semifinal push. Addressing fans on Facebook, Shanaka admitted the team had not delivered what the nation expected. “I’m deeply sorry that this World Cup didn’t end the way we hoped. As hosts, we came in with clear plans and strong confidence. I truly believed we could go further.”
‘I Accept the Criticism’
Shanaka acknowledged the anger and frustration among supporters, saying he understands the criticism comes from their passion for Sri Lankan cricket. “I know the pain and disappointment you feel towards me and the team. I humbly ask you not to lose trust in Sri Lankan cricket or in the players who are committed to carrying forward our legacy.”
The skipper stressed that defeat on such a stage is emotionally difficult for both players and fans. “It’s not easy to endure defeat when millions are dreaming of victory. I accept all criticism because it reflects your deep love for our country’s game.”
Reaffirming his commitment, Shanaka added:
“No matter the circumstances, I will always give my best for Sri Lanka. I apologise for not giving you the result you expected. Thank you for standing by us.”
Playing for Pride
Although their semifinal hopes are over, Sri Lanka still have one final Super 8 fixture — a clash against the Pakistan national cricket team, led by Salman Ali Agha, on February 28 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. With elimination confirmed, Shanaka and his team will now aim to restore pride and end their campaign on a positive note in front of home fans.
