Lalit Modi Says Sushmita Sen Was Unfairly Judged After Their Relationship Went Public
Businessman Lalit Modi has come out strongly in support of actor Sushmita Sen, rejecting the “gold digger” label that surfaced when the two made their relationship public in 2022. Speaking about the backlash for the first time in detail, Modi said the criticism was misplaced and failed to acknowledge Sen’s success and independence.
During an appearance on the Humans of Bombay podcast, Modi reflected on his relationship with the former Miss Universe, describing her as an important chapter in his life. While the romance eventually ended, he said the two continue to share mutual respect and friendship.
According to Modi, the relationship struggled because of distance rather than any personal differences. With Sen based in India and Modi living in London, maintaining the relationship became increasingly difficult over time.
Looking back at the public reaction to their romance, Modi said he was surprised by the assumptions people made about Sen’s motives. He emphasized that the actor had built her own successful career and financial standing long before they met.
Defending Sen against accusations that she was interested in his wealth, Modi claimed the reality was quite the opposite. He said she rarely allowed him to pay for anything when they were together and often took care of expenses herself.
Modi praised Sen as a self-made woman who had achieved success on her own terms and never depended on anyone financially. He added that the public criticism ignored her accomplishments and reduced her identity to unfair stereotypes.
The businessman also spoke fondly about the impact Sen had on his life, saying she helped him grow as a person and remained someone he deeply admired. Despite the relationship ending, he said he continues to regard her as a dear friend.
Their relationship first grabbed headlines in July 2022 when Modi shared vacation pictures with Sen on social media and referred to her as his partner. The announcement quickly went viral, sparking speculation about a possible marriage and triggering widespread discussion online.
Soon after, both clarified that they were dating but not married. Sen later addressed the intense scrutiny surrounding her personal life, dismissing the criticism and making it clear that public assumptions did not affect her.
Although the relationship eventually came to an end, it remained one of the most talked-about celebrity pairings of the year. Modi’s latest remarks have once again brought attention to that period, this time with a firm defence of Sen and a rejection of the narrative that followed their romance.
For Modi, the message is simple: Sushmita Sen never needed anyone’s money, and the criticism directed at her said more about public perception than it did about their relationship.
