Sheikh Hasina Aide Alleges “Clinton-Yunus” Plot, Accuses USAID of Funding 2024 Bangladesh Unrest.
A top aide of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has claimed that the Clinton family and a US government humanitarian agency were involved in the 2024 uprising that led to Hasina’s ouster. In an interview with Russia Today, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, a former minister in Hasina’s cabinet, alleged a close nexus between USAID and the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Chowdhury accused certain US-based NGOs, including USAID and the International Republican Institute, of actively campaigning against Hasina’s government since 2018. “These activities were going on for a long time… they weren’t very open, but funding of clandestine NGOs was going on,” he said, claiming the unrest was “carefully planned” to benefit Western interests.
He further alleged a longstanding connection between the Clintons and the Yunus regime, asserting that USAID funds were used to fuel regime-change activities. “The chaos was carefully planned with this money, and it turned into a big riot,” Chowdhury said, questioning the whereabouts of millions of dollars in aid.
Hasina fled Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, hours before a mob attacked her residence amid weeks of student-led protests over job quotas. The unrest left at least 700 people dead, with reports of targeted violence against Hindu minorities. Following her ouster, the Yunus-led interim government reportedly shifted Bangladesh’s foreign policy closer to Pakistan, raising concerns about historical tensions.
Hasina had previously accused Yunus of “selling the nation to the US,” citing disputes over St Martin’s Island.
The US government has rejected the claims, describing allegations of involvement in Bangladesh’s political crisis as “laughable.”
