India received a major boost ahead of the second Test as captain Shubman Gill was released from Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata after being treated for a neck injury.

Gill had been admitted on Saturday evening, a day after he hurt himself while batting in the first Test against South Africa. His absence was immediately felt on Sunday, when India collapsed to 93 all out in their second innings and suffered a 30-run defeat at Eden Gardens, giving South Africa a 1–0 lead in the two-match series.

Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at the hospital on Sunday, shortly after the match ended. Gill had retired hurt on Day 2 after sweeping Simon Harmer for a boundary and later complained of severe neck pain. He was taken for scans and kept under observation.

Ahead of Day 3, the BCCI confirmed that Gill would take no further part in the Test.
“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2. He was taken to the hospital for examination and remains under observation. He will not participate in the rest of the match,” the board said.

Gill was transported by stretcher with his neck immobilised on Saturday night, hours after walking off during India’s first innings. With the second Test scheduled to begin on November 22 in Guwahati, the team management is yet to take a call on his availability. The Indian team will travel on Tuesday.
