Veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha has reopened the debate on how film stars are inducted into politics, delivering a pointed remark widely interpreted as a dig at Kangana Ranaut.
His comments came while discussing why actor Dharmendra stepped away from politics after serving a single Lok Sabha term. In a recent interview, Sinha said political parties often rely on celebrities for their popularity during elections but fail to provide them with adequate guidance once they are elected.
‘Celebrities Are Used, Not Trained’
Reflecting on Dharmendra’s tenure as BJP MP from Bikaner (2004–2009), Sinha said parties bear responsibility for preparing celebrity leaders. “Those who brought him in and used him to fight elections are also responsible,” he said. “After elections, there is no sustained training or follow-up.”
‘At Least Tell Them When India Got Independence’
Sinha also criticised the lack of basic political orientation given to celebrity politicians today. Without naming her directly, he referred to Kangana Ranaut’s earlier controversial remark suggesting that India gained “real freedom” in 2014 rather than in 1947.
“When you bring people into politics, teach them something. At least tell them when the country got independence,” he said, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.
Recalling His Own Mentorship
Sinha contrasted the current political environment with his early years, when he was mentored by senior BJP leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, Madan Lal Khurana and Kailashpati Mishra. “In our time, there was training,” he said, noting that structured political guidance is largely missing today.
A Pattern of One-Term Exits
Sinha pointed out that Dharmendra is not alone in stepping away after one term, citing Sunny Deol’s exit after his tenure as an MP. He suggested both actors felt disillusioned with the system.
‘Hema Malini Has Not Received Her Due’
He also noted that despite her long association with the BJP, Hema Malini has yet to receive the responsibilities he believes she deserves. “Hema ji is senior and capable. She hasn’t been given her due,” Sinha said.
‘Dharmendra Needed Support After His Win’
Sinha concluded by saying Dharmendra had won his seat by a large margin and should have received more guidance from party leaders. “They should have sat with him at least once a week,” he said. Though framed around Dharmendra’s political journey, Sinha’s comments have once again brought attention to Kangana Ranaut’s earlier statements and the broader question of whether celebrity politicians are properly supported beyond election season.
