Smriti Mandhana Leads India to Series Victory with Dominant Nine-Wicket Win Over Zimbabwe

India secured a convincing nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I in Raipur, taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series. Chasing a target of 103, the Indian team reached 104/1 in just 8.5 overs, with captain Smriti Mandhana finishing the match in emphatic fashion by smashing a six.

The victory marked Mandhana’s first series triumph as captain of the Indian women’s team. After a closely contested opening match, India produced a commanding performance, combining aggressive batting with disciplined bowling to outclass the visitors.

Vice-captain Shafali Verma starred with a blistering 55 off 25 balls, while Mandhana remained unbeaten on 47 from the same number of deliveries. The opening pair attacked from the outset, helping India accumulate 76 runs in the powerplay and leaving Zimbabwe with little chance of defending their total.

Shafali departed with India requiring only seven runs to win, allowing Mandhana to complete the chase with a powerful hit over the boundary off Olinder Chare.

Shafali and Mandhana Power India’s Chase

Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo would have hoped her bowlers could repeat their success from the first T20I, when India’s opening batters were dismissed early. However, Shafali and Mandhana ensured there was no repeat of that situation.

Shafali began aggressively, hitting Nyasha Gwanzura for a boundary and a six in the opening over. Mandhana soon joined the attack, and the pair continued to put pressure on Zimbabwe’s bowling unit.

The fourth over saw Mandhana strike four consecutive boundaries, while Shafali maintained her attacking approach with a combination of fours and sixes. Their scoring rate left Zimbabwe struggling to regain control.

The partnership was also significant statistically, marking the pair’s ninth fifty-plus stand in women’s T20 internationals during the calendar year—the highest number by any pair in a single year.

Speaking after the match, Mandhana said she was happy to give Shafali the strike when her partner was batting well. She emphasised that aggressive cricket was central to the team’s approach.

Shafali, who received the Player of the Match award, said consistency had been a major focus for her. She explained that she had analysed Australian batters to identify ways to improve her performance and contribute more reliably to the team.

During her innings, Shafali also moved past Mandhana in the list of Indian players with the most sixes in women’s T20 internationals.

Indian Bowlers Keep Zimbabwe Under Pressure

India’s bowlers established control early in the first innings, restricting Zimbabwe to 102/8 in 20 overs.

Nandani Sharma provided the opening breakthrough by dismissing Kelis Ndhlovu for a duck. Zimbabwe struggled to score freely during the powerplay, managing just 20 runs and losing a wicket.

Biza’s dismissal shortly after the powerplay added to the visitors’ difficulties. Captain Josephine Nkomo and Chipo Tiripano subsequently combined to stabilise the innings, recording a 45-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Tiripano contributed 34 off 32 balls, while Nkomo remained unbeaten on 27. Tiripano also took advantage of scoring opportunities against left-arm spinner Shree Charani, using the reverse sweep to find consecutive boundaries.

The partnership helped Zimbabwe collect 56 runs between the seventh and 15th overs, offering some momentum after their slow start. However, India soon broke the stand and prevented the visitors from accelerating further.

Niki Prasad Delivers Crucial Breakthroughs

Mandhana turned to Niki Prasad at a crucial stage, and the decision paid off immediately.

Prasad dismissed Tiripano by drawing an edge that wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh caught safely. She then trapped Nyasha Gwanzura leg-before-wicket, putting further pressure on the Zimbabwean batting order.

The quick wickets disrupted Zimbabwe’s efforts to build a competitive total. Running errors and India’s continued pressure further limited the visitors’ scoring opportunities.

Prasad’s contribution was particularly encouraging, having also played a decisive role with the bat in the opening match. Her performance underlined India’s growing depth and the emergence of young players capable of influencing matches in multiple ways.

Fielding Remains an Area of Concern

Despite the comprehensive victory, India will need to improve their catching. Dropped chances have been a recurring concern, and stronger opponents could capitalise on such mistakes.

The team will be encouraged by the contributions of its top-order batters and bowlers, but maintaining consistency across all departments will be important in upcoming international competitions.

With Mandhana beginning her captaincy tenure with a series victory, India have made a positive start to a new phase. The emphatic win over Zimbabwe demonstrated the team’s attacking potential and provided valuable opportunities for emerging players to establish themselves.
