Guru Randhawa’s latest song Azul has come under fire for its portrayal of schoolgirls.
In the music video, Randhawa plays a photographer visiting an all-girls school for a class photo—a scenario critics say has been turned into a “sexualised, problematic fantasy.” Actress Sonam Kapoor has reportedly agreed with these concerns.
A news outlet highlighted on Instagram that the video not only sexualizes schoolgirls but also compares them to alcohol brands. The post quickly went viral, and Sonam Kapoor reportedly reacted by liking it.
The video has drawn criticism from many viewers, who argue it normalizes harassment and the sexualization of minors, even though the performers are adults playing school-aged characters. One user wrote, “School kids are consuming the message that sexualizing girls is okay!” Another commented, “Cinema and music have a huge impact on society, and videos like this risk normalizing harmful behavior.”
Guru Randhawa has not directly responded to the backlash but has continued to share posts celebrating the song’s trending success in India. On August 9, he posted a photo with the lead dancer from the video, liked by Tamannaah Bhatia, while clips of the song’s shoot received likes from Varun Dhawan and Mrunal Thakur. Although it’s possible the actors haven’t seen the video itself, their reactions have attracted attention.
The song has thus received a mix of praise and criticism. Randhawa has thanked fans for their support, but the backlash remains unaddressed, and comments on his Instagram posts have now been limited.
