Sourav Ganguly Gets Death Threat, Lodges Police Complaint With Kolkata Police

Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and his wife, Dona Ganguly, have received alleged death threats, prompting the family to file a police complaint in Kolkata.

Authorities have also been alerted about the security concerns surrounding the high-profile couple. According to the complaint filed by Ganguly’s personal assistant, threatening letters have been arriving for several months. The family initially dismissed them as messages from disgruntled fans or individuals holding a personal grudge. However, the latest letters reportedly contained explicit threats against Ganguly, his wife and members of his staff, prompting immediate police intervention.

The latest communication was reportedly opened at the office of the Bengal cricket president on Monday. Written in English, the letters allegedly contained derogatory remarks and threats to “eliminate” or “finish” Ganguly and his family.

A formal complaint has been lodged at Thakurpukur Police Station. The state government’s security department has also been informed and is assessing whether additional protection should be provided to the family.

Threatening Letters Reportedly Received For Months

The complaint states that unknown individuals had been sending letters containing objectionable remarks about Ganguly for the past few months. The family initially chose not to pursue the matter, believing the letters reflected personal resentment rather than a genuine threat.

However, the latest letters allegedly escalated from abusive or derogatory comments to direct threats to the lives and safety of Ganguly, Dona and people working with the former cricketer. The complaint has urged police to identify the sender, investigate the circumstances behind the threats and take necessary steps to protect the Ganguly family and their staff.

Police Probe Sender’s Identity

Preliminary investigation suggests that the letters were sent by courier to the Ganguly residence. The sender was reportedly identified on the package as Arun Kumar, a resident of Belgharia. Investigators have also traced a phone number mentioned in the communication. A search on Truecaller reportedly displayed the same name.

Police are now verifying whether the person named Arun Kumar actually sent the letters or whether his identity was allegedly used by someone else. “We have started an investigation and are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Mr. Ganguly and his family,” police officials reportedly told Ganguly’s personal assistant.

The state security department is reviewing the threat in view of Ganguly’s public profile and will determine whether additional security arrangements are necessary. The investigation is currently underway, and police are yet to establish the identity and motive of the person responsible for the alleged threats.
