Spain Rules Out US F-35, Backs European Fighter Jet Programs.

Spain has officially decided against purchasing US-made F-35 fighter jets, choosing instead to strengthen its commitment to European defense initiatives. According to government sources, Madrid will focus on two key programs: the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) — a next-generation fighter jet project led by France, Germany, and Spain — and further expansion of its Eurofighter Typhoon fleet.

The decision reflects Spain’s strategic preference for European-built defense systems that enhance industrial collaboration and regional autonomy. Lockheed Martin had pitched the F-35 as a combat-proven option with NATO-wide compatibility, but Spain declined to pursue it.

“Spain remains committed to developing its own capabilities in partnership with European allies,” a senior defense official said. The FCAS program, expected to be operational by the 2040s, is designed to rival next-gen fighters like the F-35.
