Neeraj Chopra’s South Africa Camp Extended as Sports Ministry Approves Full Support
Javelin star Neeraj Chopra will now continue his pre-season training in South Africa until April, after the Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) approved an extension along with comprehensive financial support. The move comes ahead of the 2026 competitive season, allowing Chopra to focus fully on fitness and technical refinement.
Extended Camp and New Training Base
Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist, began his pre-season camp in Potchefstroom in January, initially approved for 32 days. He will now move to Pretoria for the extended stint before opening his competitive season at the Doha Diamond League in May.
The extension ensures Chopra has adequate time to work on adjustments following a challenging 2025 season, where he battled an adductor injury and experienced mixed results, including a career-defining 90-metre throw at the Doha Diamond League but a disappointing eighth-place finish at the World Championships in Tokyo.
Coaching Changes and Holistic Preparation
The camp also marks a strategic shift in Chopra’s coaching setup. He has parted ways with Czech legend Jan Zelezny and reunited with Jai Chaudhary, the coach who mentored him in his formative years in Panipat. Chaudhary will oversee technical and fitness work, supported by Chopra’s longtime physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha, underlining a comprehensive, holistic approach.
World-Class Facilities and Complete Backing
The Potchefstroom and Pretoria facilities are considered among the world’s best for javelin throwers, offering state-of-the-art training infrastructure. The MOC’s support covers all essential expenses, including training costs, gym and track access, local logistics, airport transfers, and daily allowances, allowing Chopra to concentrate solely on preparation.
Eyes on a Strong Return
With his extended camp, Chopra is targeting a fully fit and technically refined return at the Doha Diamond League in May 2026, aiming to hit peak form ahead of a busy competitive season. The government-backed extension underscores India’s commitment to supporting elite athletes in their quest for global success.
