Sensex, Nifty Begin Wednesday’s Trade on Weak Note; IT Stocks Rally, India VIX Surges 3%

Indian stock markets opened marginally lower on Wednesday, October 14, as buying in information technology shares was offset by losses in banking, pharmaceutical, metal and financial services stocks. The cautious opening came amid mixed market cues and a rise in the India VIX, indicating heightened expectations of near-term volatility.

The Nifty 50 started the session at 22,715.75, slightly below its previous close of 22,721.95. The BSE Sensex was at 72,976.88 at 9:16 am, down 56.90 points, or 0.08%.

Midcap and Smallcap Indices Under Pressure

The broader market indices also opened in negative territory, reflecting selling pressure beyond the frontline benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.27%, while the Nifty Midcap 150 lost 0.25%.

The Nifty Smallcap 50 fell 0.31%, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 edged down 0.05% in early trade.

Meanwhile, the India VIX climbed 3.09% to 14.56. The rise in the volatility index pointed to increased expectations of market fluctuations as investors monitored sectoral movements and broader sentiment.

Nifty IT Emerges as Top Sectoral Performer

Information technology stocks led sectoral gains, with the Nifty IT index advancing 1.27%. Strong buying in major IT companies helped cushion some of the weakness in the broader market.

The Nifty FMCG index rose 0.35%, while the Nifty Media index gained 0.27%. The Nifty Private Bank index edged up 0.07%, and the Nifty Auto index added 0.01%.

In contrast, the Nifty PSU Bank index declined 0.65%, while the Nifty Financial Services ex-Bank index slipped 0.64%. The Nifty Healthcare index dropped 0.53%, the Nifty Pharma index fell 0.52%, and the Nifty Metal index declined 0.47%.

The Nifty Consumer Durables index lost 0.48%, the Nifty Financial Services 25/50 index fell 0.37%, and the Nifty Realty index was down 0.34%.

TCS, HCL Technologies and Infosys Gain

IT heavyweights were among the key gainers on the Sensex during the opening session. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) advanced 2.06%, while HCL Technologies rose 1.44%. Infosys gained 1.14%, and Tech Mahindra climbed 0.68%.

Kotak Mahindra Bank and Bharat Electronics also traded higher, providing additional support to the market.

Bajaj Finance and Eternal Weigh on Sentiment

Selling pressure was visible in several major stocks. Bajaj Finance declined 0.95%, while Eternal dropped 0.93%. Larsen & Toubro fell 0.79%, and Power Grid Corporation slipped 0.76%.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries lost 0.66%. Adani Ports, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel and Titan were among the other stocks trading lower.

With gains concentrated in IT shares and weakness persisting across several key sectors, investors began Wednesday’s session cautiously. Market participants will continue to track sectoral performance and volatility for further direction.
