Su-57, S-500, Super Sukhoi: Russia’s Defence Wishlist For India At BRICS Summit

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the capital for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Defence cooperation is set to be an important part of the discussions, with Russia presenting several major proposals, including the joint production of the Su-57 fighter jet and a multi-billion-dollar upgrade of India’s Su-30MKI fleet.

During his meeting with Putin, Modi said defence was among the key issues discussed, along with trade, infrastructure and technology. Moscow is also expected to push proposals involving the S-500 air-defence system, S-400 support, Pantsir-S1M systems, advanced radars and strategic submarines.

Russia’s S-500 Pitch to India

Russia is seeking to expand its air-defence partnership with India by offering the S-500 system. The next-generation system is reported to have an engagement range of up to 600 km, compared with the reported range of around 400 km for the S-400.

For India’s existing S-400 systems, Moscow has proposed establishing a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in India, potentially in collaboration with an Indian company. The move could improve local servicing and long-term support for the systems.

Su-57 Joint Production Proposal

The Su-57 is another major component of Russia’s defence pitch. Moscow has proposed joint production of the fifth-generation stealth fighter in India as New Delhi explores options to strengthen its future combat-aircraft fleet.

The proposal could also support India’s push for greater domestic defence manufacturing and technology cooperation.

$11 Billion ‘Super Sukhoi’ Upgrade

Russia is also offering a major modernisation programme for India’s Su-30MKI fleet, which numbers around 260 aircraft. The first phase of the proposed “Super Sukhoi” programme is expected to cover 84 fighters, while the overall project is estimated to cost more than $11 billion.

The upgrade package is expected to include advanced AESA radars, upgraded avionics, enhanced electronic-warfare capabilities and new engines. The aim is to extend the service life of the Su-30MKI while significantly improving its detection, electronic-warfare and combat capabilities.

The BRICS Summit will also focus on strengthening cooperation among member countries, with leaders expected to discuss major global and regional issues.

BRICS currently comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Its partner countries include Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
