Sukhbir Badal Attack: Accused Says SAD Chief Targeted Over ‘Failure’ to Curb Drugs

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was allegedly attacked by 62-year-old Jaspal Singh in Nanded, Maharashtra.

With the accused reportedly telling investigators that he acted against the backdrop of the former Punjab government’s handling of the drug crisis. Sources said Singh alleged that the SAD government had failed to take sufficiently strict action against drugs during its tenure in Punjab, claiming that the lack of strong measures had contributed to many young people being affected by drug abuse.

Investigators are verifying the accused’s statements and examining whether they point to a wider political motive. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and central agencies also questioned Singh until late Wednesday night, sources said.

Attack at Hazur Sahib

Badal was attacked near Mata Sahib Gurdwara at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded on Thursday afternoon. The accused, identified as Nihang Jaspal Singh, allegedly approached Badal with a kirpan as the SAD chief was coming down the steps after visiting the shrine. The incident took place around 1:30 pm.

Singh allegedly attempted to stab Badal in the stomach, but security personnel intervened. Badal suffered an injury to his hand and was subsequently taken to Yashosai Hospital.

Security officer injured

Inspector Santosh Kendre, part of the special security team deployed for Badal, sustained injuries while attempting to restrain the attacker.

Nanded Superintendent of Police Rohan said there was no security lapse and that Badal was under Z+ security cover. The attacker was overpowered and taken into custody immediately after the incident.

Accused’s background

Singh, 62, had reportedly been working at the gurdwara for around two years. He is originally from Pune and had previously worked as a lawyer at a court there. During questioning, he reportedly told police that he “just felt like doing this,” while investigators continue to examine his motive and background.

FIR filed

An FIR has been registered against Singh at Mudkhed police station in Nanded. Police have invoked provisions relating to attempt to murder, obstructing a government employee in the discharge of duty and offences under the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway.

Badal has Z+ security cover. CISF personnel accompany him in Punjab and Delhi, while Maharashtra Police provide his security when he is in the state.
