Sunjay Kapur’s Sister Claims Family Marginalized by Sona Comstar.

Mandhira Kapur Smith, sister of the late Sona Comstar Chairperson Sunjay Kapur, has alleged that her family—especially her 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapur—has been sidelined and disrespected by the company founded by their late father. In an interview with ANI, she said the family has been “treated like strangers.”

Mandhira claimed that family members’ names were excluded from obituaries and public acknowledgments. She highlighted her mother’s key role in supporting Surinder Kapur as he built the business from a jewellery trade into a leading automotive company. Despite this, Rani Kapur has reportedly been excluded from the company and denied a non-executive board seat.

The dispute escalated after Sona Comstar issued a cease-and-desist notice to Rani Kapur. She has stated that she is the sole beneficiary of Surinder Kapur’s estate and the majority shareholder of the Sona Group, including Sona Comstar. Rani Kapur also alleged she was pressured into approving the appointment of her daughter-in-law, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as a non-executive director. The company responded, saying she has had no role since 2019.

Mandhira criticised the company for asking her mother to apologise publicly after requesting a delay to a board meeting following Sunjay Kapur’s death. “She has been thrown to the curb. They have not cared about her or her feelings,” Mandhira said.

She added that the conflict is about more than money: “People who built the company see a legacy, we see our dad’s dreams.” Mandhira also revealed her mother’s ongoing grief over Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death on June 12 in London, where an autopsy cited cardiac arrest.
