Israeli Airstrikes Rock Damascus, Syrian News Anchor Flees Live Broadcast.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated dramatically on Wednesday as powerful Israeli airstrikes struck key Syrian military installations in Damascus, forcing a news anchor to abandon her live bulletin and flee the studio.
The dramatic moment was captured on video and later shared by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who posted it with the caption: “The painful blows have begun.” The video shows the anchor visibly startled before abruptly leaving the set as explosions echoed across the Syrian capital.
Target: Syrian Defence Ministry and Army Headquarters
While initial reports speculated that the strikes had targeted a state-run television studio, Israel-based outlet ILTV clarified that the anchor’s reaction was likely in response to Israeli attacks on the Syrian Defence Ministry and Army Headquarters, located near the broadcasting facility.
According to a Reuters report, the strikes sent thick plumes of smoke billowing over central Damascus, with explosions rattling buildings and shattering windows. Warplanes were seen flying low before unleashing a barrage of missiles near the ministry’s gate.
The Israeli military later confirmed the strike, describing it as a response to violence in southern Syria, where government forces have clashed with members of the Druze community.
Escalation Over Sweida Unrest
The offensive comes amid rising unrest in Sweida, a predominantly Druze city in southern Syria, where clashes this week between Druze fighters, Bedouin tribes, and government security forces have reportedly left scores dead. Israel has repeatedly expressed concern for the safety of the Druze minority, many of whom have ethnic and familial ties to communities in northern Israel.
“The Druze are under threat, and Israel will act to protect them,” Defence Minister Katz said earlier in the week.
A resident of Sweida told Reuters, “We are surrounded, and we hear the fighters screaming… we’re so scared.”
Rising Regional Tensions
The latest developments mark a significant flare-up in regional hostilities, with Israel signaling a more aggressive stance against Syrian government forces. Analysts warn the strikes could widen the conflict zone if clashes continue to spiral between the Assad regime and local opposition groups.
While Syria has not yet officially responded to Wednesday’s airstrikes, the targeting of key military command centers in the heart of Damascus signals a potential shift in Israel’s engagement strategy across the northern frontier.
