Japan PM Takaichi’s Party Set for Landslide Victory, Asahi Poll Shows
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is poised for a decisive win in next week’s lower house election, according to a Sunday poll by the Asahi newspaper. The survey indicates the LDP could comfortably surpass the 233-seat majority needed, rising from its current 198 seats. With coalition partner Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), the ruling alliance may reach around 300 seats.
A strong mandate would solidify Takaichi’s control of the party and back her expansionary fiscal policies, which could raise concerns about Japan’s finances and push bond yields higher. The largest opposition, the Centrist Reform Alliance, is struggling and may lose nearly half its 167 seats. While the coalition holds a slim majority in the lower house, it remains in the minority in the upper house.
