Chennai Faces Week-Long Rain, Puducherry Schools Closed Amid Heavy Downpour.

Chennai is set for a week of rain, with intermittent light to moderate showers and occasional thunderstorms, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The IMD has issued stronger weather alerts for two days during this period.

Rising Night Temperatures
Minimum temperatures in Chennai and districts like Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, and Tiruvallur are 1.6°C to 3°C above normal. Erode and Madurai airports recorded the highest daytime temperature at 32°C, while Karur Paramathi saw the lowest minimum at 20°C.

Schools Closed in Puducherry and Karaikal
Persistent rain since Saturday caused waterlogging and disruption. Authorities declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday, as confirmed by Home and Education Minister A. Namassivayam.

IMD Heavy Rain Alert
Southern and delta districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal, are expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

Weather Systems Driving the Rain

  • A low-pressure area near the South Andaman Sea may intensify into a depression by Monday, channeling moisture into Tamil Nadu.
  • Another system near the Comorin region is expected to form a low-pressure area by November 25.
  • A third system over the Southeast Arabian Sea is also contributing to unstable conditions.

These systems together are keeping the state under a prolonged wet spell, with southern districts receiving heavier showers while Chennai experiences intermittent rain.
