Ukraine Attack Sets Oil Tanker Ablaze Off Sochi, 23 Indian Crew Members Rescued

An oil tanker caught fire in the Black Sea off Russia’s southern coast after what Moscow described as a Ukrainian naval drone attack, sending a huge cloud of black smoke over the resort city of Sochi on Tuesday evening.

The tanker, which was sailing under the Liberian flag, was carrying crude oil when it came under attack, according to Russia’s Transport Ministry. The ministry said the intensity of the blaze prevented firefighters from immediately tackling the fire.

All 23 members of the tanker’s crew were rescued, Russian authorities said. They were all Indian nationals.

Flames, Black Smoke Seen From Sochi

The fire broke out offshore but was clearly visible from Sochi, a major Russian resort city with a population of nearly 500,000.

Images and videos circulating on social media showed bright flames burning on the sea and a dense column of black smoke rising high into the sky.

Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin said access to the coastline and beaches was being restricted as authorities dealt with the incident.

Russia’s Transport Ministry said crude oil was burning openly in the Black Sea, raising concerns about possible pollution in the surrounding waters.

Commercial Ships Increasingly Drawn Into War

The incident highlights the growing risks for commercial shipping in the Black Sea, where vessels carrying civilian cargo have repeatedly come under attack during the Russia-Ukraine war.

Both sides have targeted maritime and energy-related infrastructure since the conflict began in 2022. The latest attack also comes shortly after Russia struck grain vessels carrying Ukrainian goods near Romania, a European Union member.

The increasing attacks have added fresh uncertainty for ships operating along the Black Sea coast and around key ports.

Kyiv Defends Strikes on Russian Oil Infrastructure

Ukraine has previously targeted Russian oil facilities and energy infrastructure, arguing that such attacks are retaliation for Moscow’s repeated strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

The two countries have stepped up their long-range attacks in recent weeks.

Russia has intensified strikes on Kyiv, including daytime drone attacks on the capital. The change in timing has disrupted daily life in the city and contributed to major traffic congestion.

Ukrainian strikes on oil facilities in southern Russia have previously led to oil spills, beach closures and other environmental concerns, including reports of contaminated rainfall.

The tanker fire off Sochi now adds another maritime incident to an increasingly dangerous operating environment for commercial vessels in the Black Sea.
