ITR Filing Glitches Spark Calls for Deadline Extension.
Taxpayers are continuing to face difficulties filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for assessment year 2025-26, as the e-filing portal remains plagued by technical glitches. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had extended the filing deadline by one day, from September 15 to September 16. However, no further extensions have been announced, despite growing public demand.
The portal, maintained by Infosys, has reportedly been malfunctioning, prompting taxpayers to voice frustration on X (formerly Twitter). Chartered Accountant Himank Singla said that despite persistent issues, “CBDT has refused to extend ITR deadlines,” and added that the Income Tax Practitioners Association (ITPA), along with several bar and tax associations, plans to file a joint writ petition in the Punjab & Haryana High Court.
Another user, Nitin Malik, shared a screenshot of the malfunctioning portal, writing: “There is no use of extending ITR filing date while your portal is not working… Please do something to restore portal functionality.” The Income Tax Department clarified that the original due date of July 31, 2025, had been extended to September 16, 2025. The portal was scheduled for maintenance from 12:00 AM to 2:30 AM on September 16.
So far, more than 7 crore ITRs have been filed. The department urged remaining taxpayers to complete their filings and highlighted its 24×7 helpdesk support, available via calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media.
