The White House has sharply criticised California for issuing a commercial driver’s licence to an undocumented Indian-origin truck driver, Jashanpreet Singh.
Who caused a fatal eight-vehicle crash in Ontario, California, killing three people and injuring four others. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the incident as part of a “disturbing pattern” of illegal immigrants being granted commercial driving privileges in the United States.
Leavitt said, “California issued a licence to this individual, who first entered the United States in 2022 through the southern border. ICE has now lodged a detainer following his arrest. These tragedies reflect a troubling pattern of criminal illegal aliens being issued commercial vehicle licences.”
Singh, 21, allegedly drove under the influence when his semi-truck collided with multiple vehicles on a Southern California freeway. Dashcam footage showed the truck hitting a small SUV, several other vehicles, and eventually a disabled truck on the shoulder. Singh was arrested and charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, as well as DUI causing injury. He is scheduled for arraignment on Friday and currently does not have legal representation.
Leavitt highlighted that the Department of Transportation, under Secretary Sean Duffy, has begun cracking down on commercial licences being issued to noncitizens who do not meet legal requirements. She said similar restrictions were implemented after a deadly crash in Florida in August involving an undocumented truck driver.
“The Transportation Department is taking action to ensure licences are not wrongfully issued, and there will be consequences for violations,” Leavitt added, reaffirming the Trump administration’s push to tighten oversight on who can operate commercial vehicles in the United States.
Singh, originally from Punjab and residing in Yuba City, California, entered the US illegally in 2022. The crash has renewed debates over state compliance with federal guidelines for commercial driver licensing and the broader handling of undocumented immigrants in positions that can impact public safety.
