Tesla to Launch First India Showroom in Mumbai, Starts Sales with China-Made Model Y SUVs.
Tesla is finally entering the Indian market, with its first showroom set to open in Mumbai next month, according to a report by Bloomberg News. The move comes as the EV giant looks to tap into the world’s third-largest car market, amid slowing sales in its traditional markets like China and Europe.
The Mumbai outlet will be followed by a second showroom in Delhi. Ahead of the launch, Tesla has imported supercharger units, accessories, spare parts, and merchandise from the US, China, and the Netherlands.
China-Made Model Y SUVs Arrive
Tesla’s India debut will feature its popular Model Y SUV, built at its Shanghai factory. At least five units have already landed in Mumbai, with more expected soon. The Model Y is currently the world’s best-selling electric vehicle.
Customs documents show the Model Y was declared at ₹27.7 lakh (approx. $32,000), with an additional ₹21 lakh in import duties—reflecting India’s high tariffs on fully built imported cars. Industry insiders expect the vehicle to retail above $56,000 in India, excluding taxes and insurance.
Breakthrough After Modi-Musk Meeting
Tesla’s entry follows a prolonged standoff with Indian authorities over import duties and local manufacturing requirements. The deadlock eased after Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US earlier this year, paving the way for a phased India rollout.
The company is expected to begin by selling a few thousand imported cars, while exploring local assembly options based on market response and policy support.
