Thailand Cuts Visa-Free Stay for Indians to 30 Days From September 15

Thailand is set to shorten the visa-free stay available to travellers from 60 countries and territories, including India, from September 15, 2026.

Under the revised rules, eligible visitors will be allowed to stay for up to 30 days without a tourist visa, compared with the current 60-day limit. The change will not affect visa-free entry for Indian tourists. Travellers holding eligible Indian passports can still enter Thailand without applying for a tourist visa in advance, but those arriving from September 15 will be granted a maximum stay of 30 days.

Visitors who enter Thailand on or before September 14 will continue to receive the 60-day stay under the existing exemption. The new 30-day limit will apply to arrivals from September 15 onward.

What It Means for Indian Travellers

The revised policy is unlikely to affect most Indian tourists, particularly those planning week-long or two-week holidays. However, travellers planning longer backpacking trips, extended island-hopping itineraries or stays spanning several destinations will need to plan around the new 30-day limit.

Those who wish to remain in Thailand beyond the visa-free period will need to explore the relevant visa or extension options.

Thai authorities have introduced the change amid concerns that extended visa-free stays were being misused for unauthorised employment and other non-tourism activities. The policy is intended to maintain easier access for genuine tourists while tightening controls against misuse.
