Thailand PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra Suspended Following Leaked Phone Call Scandal.

Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office over a leaked phone call that allegedly revealed improper interference in government affairs. The decision was made as the court agreed to hear a petition accusing the PM of violating the Constitution and ethical conduct rules.

What Triggered the Suspension?
The controversy stems from a leaked audio recording in which a voice—allegedly Paetongtarn’s—discusses influencing bureaucratic appointments and internal government matters. The conversation quickly raised red flags about abuse of power and sparked political uproar across party lines.

A group of 40 senators filed a petition against the prime minister, citing Section 170 of the Thai Constitution, which bars officeholders from exploiting their position or engaging in unconstitutional behavior.

Constitutional Court’s Ruling
The court unanimously agreed to take up the petition and, in a 6-3 vote, ruled to suspend Paetongtarn from her official duties pending the investigation. The court cited the seriousness of the allegations as the reason for her immediate suspension.

“The Court sees enough grounds in the allegations to justify a temporary suspension while the case is under review,” read the official statement.

Deputy PM Steps In
Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has been named acting prime minister in the interim. He assured citizens that the government would continue to function smoothly and pledged to support the judicial process.

Political Fallout
Paetongtarn, daughter of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, took office earlier this year after her Pheu Thai Party led a successful coalition. Her sudden suspension is expected to deepen political divisions in Thailand, where the Shinawatra family remains a polarizing force.

Supporters have called the move a political ploy, while critics say the leaked call indicates a breach of democratic principles and warrants scrutiny.

What Happens Next?
The Constitutional Court has not yet set a date for the next hearing. If found guilty, Paetongtarn could be permanently removed from office and face a political ban.
