Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel was on Friday denied bail and sent to 14-day judicial custody by the Chinsurah Court in connection with a complaint alleging sexual relations under the pretext of marriage.

The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was arrested by Mogra Police after a woman lodged a complaint against him on June 23. She allegedly accused Porel of having a relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later engaging in misconduct.

Porel was first produced before the court on August 11 and was remanded to three days of police custody. After the police remand ended, he was produced before the court again on Friday, where his bail plea was rejected.

According to sources, Porel and the complainant had been in a relationship for around three and a half years and had planned to marry. The two had also reportedly travelled abroad together. A dispute between them around 18 months ago had led to police intervention, although no FIR was registered at the time.

Police had made several visits to Porel’s Chandannagar residence but were unable to trace him. The complainant subsequently approached the Calcutta High Court, which directed Mogra Police to arrest him immediately.

Following the High Court’s order, Porel was arrested in Kolkata and booked under multiple sections. He will now remain in judicial custody for 14 days as the investigation continues.
