Dr. N. Jency Becomes Tamil Nadu’s First Transgender Woman to Earn PhD and Join Academia as Assistant Professor.

In a historic milestone for transgender representation in higher education, Dr. N. Jency has become the first transgender woman in Tamil Nadu to earn a PhD and be appointed as an Assistant Professor. She will be joining the Department of English at Loyola College, Chennai—one of the city’s premier academic institutions.

From Tiruttani to Academia
Dr. Jency hails from Tiruttani in the Tiruvallur district. Her journey has been marked by perseverance, academic brilliance, and the courage to defy social stigma. A consistent topper, she secured gold medals in both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in English literature before completing her PhD.

Her appointment has earned praise from across the state, including from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who lauded her achievement and reaffirmed the role of education in promoting social justice. “Let hundreds more succeed through education as you have, and let education triumph over rejection and discrimination,” he said in a statement.

A Voice for Change
In her remarks following the appointment, Dr. Jency highlighted that her achievement represents not just personal success but progress for the entire transgender community. “This is not just my victory; it belongs to my community. I endured a great deal to reach this point. Education has the power to transform lives—and it transformed mine.”

Urging families and society to embrace transgender individuals, she added:

“Why reject us when we are also part of nature? I was a gold medallist in UG and PG, even when my own family struggled to accept me. If given support, many like me can rise.”

Seeking Lasting Inclusion
During her meeting with the Chief Minister, Dr. Jency requested a permanent teaching position at a Tamil Nadu government college. “I don’t have a father,” she said. “But I see the Chief Minister as a father figure. A permanent post would inspire others in my community to pursue education and believe in themselves.”

A Step Toward Equity in Education
Dr. Jency’s appointment stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of inclusive education. Her journey underscores the importance of equal opportunities and representation in academic institutions and beyond.
