Trump Declares “War on Drugs” Against Venezuela, Pardons Convicted Honduran Cocaine Trafficker
US President Donald Trump announced a “war on drugs” targeting Venezuela, ordering military and diplomatic operations against networks linked to President Nicolás Maduro. The US also designated the Venezuelan cartel, Cartel of the Suns, as a foreign terrorist organisation, authorised strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels, and deployed Marines and warships to the Caribbean.
In a controversial move, Trump pardoned former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, convicted in 2024 for aiding the smuggling of hundreds of tons of cocaine into the US. Trump defended the pardon as fair, but critics highlighted Hernandez’s criminal ties and described the decision as “unconscionable,” noting its timing ahead of Honduras’ presidential election.
