Trump Slaps 35% Tariff on Canada, Warns of Retaliation Blowback.

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a 35% tariff on imports from Canada, set to take effect August 1, and warned the rate could rise if Ottawa retaliates.

In a letter posted on his social media platform, Trump informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of the move, calling it part of a broader strategy to “correct decades of unfair trade.”

The announcement is part of a sweeping escalation in Trump’s global trade offensive. In recent days, the U.S. has imposed steep new tariffs on several countries—including allies Japan and South Korea—and introduced a 50% tariff on copper.

In an interview with NBC News, Trump confirmed that more countries could soon face blanket tariffs of 15% to 20%. “If they haven’t gotten the letter yet, they will,” he said.
