Trump-Xi Summit Possible at APEC or During China Visit Ahead of Tariff Deadline.

US President Donald Trump may meet Chinese President Xi Jinping either during a possible visit to China or on the sidelines of the APEC summit in South Korea from October 30 to November 1, South China Morning Post reported on Sunday, citing multiple sources.

The potential summit comes as both nations seek to de-escalate a deepening tariff conflict that has rattled global trade and supply chains. Trump has floated a universal base tariff of 10% on all imports, with even steeper duties on goods from “problematic” countries — including China, where tariffs now peak at 55%.

Critics say these tariffs could raise consumer prices across the US, while Trump argues they will boost domestic manufacturing. He has set a deadline of August 12 for the US and China to reach a durable trade agreement, according to Reuters.

The last high-level engagement between the two countries was on July 11, when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Malaysia. Both sides described the talks as “productive.”

Rubio also revealed that Trump has been invited to visit China and emphasized that both leaders are eager to meet. “There is a high probability that President Trump and President Xi will meet this year,” he told reporters, citing a “strong desire on both sides.”

Meanwhile, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said on Friday that Beijing wants to restore stability in trade ties with Washington. He added that recent discussions in Europe had reinforced that “a tariff war is not necessary.”

If confirmed, the Trump-Xi meeting would mark a major diplomatic milestone ahead of the looming trade deadline and could reshape the direction of US-China economic relations.
