US Secret Service agents shot and killed an armed intruder who breached the secure perimeter of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida early Sunday, the agency said. Trump was in Washington at the time of the incident, which officials said occurred around 1:30 am (0630 GMT).
“An armed man was shot and killed by US Secret Service agents along with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after unlawfully entering the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago,” spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a post on X.
In a statement, the agency said the suspect — a man in his early 20s — was spotted near the property’s north gate carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can. Agents confronted the individual and opened fire. No officers were injured.
Trump has faced multiple assassination threats in recent years. Earlier this month, Ryan Routh, 59, was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to assassinate Trump at a Florida golf course in September 2024.
That plot followed a separate assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, where 20-year-old Matthew Crooks fired several shots during a campaign rally, one grazing Trump’s right ear. Crooks was fatally shot by security personnel at the scene, and his motive remains unknown.
