Vijay on Tuesday ordered the closure of 717 liquor outlets operating within 500 metres of religious places, educational institutions and bus stations across Tamil Nadu, according to an official government release.

The state government said the closures must be completed within the next two weeks in the interest of public welfare.

At present, 4,765 liquor retail outlets are being run by Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC). Following an audit ordered by the chief minister, authorities identified hundreds of shops allegedly functioning in violation of distance norms.

“Currently, 4,765 liquor retail shops are being operated by TASMAC. Among these, the Chief Minister ordered an audit to identify shops located within 500 metres of places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stations,” the release stated.

The audit found that 717 outlets fell within the restricted zones.

According to the government, the affected shops include 276 outlets located near places of worship, 186 near educational institutions and 255 close to bus stations.

“Keeping public welfare in mind, the Chief Minister has ordered the closure of all 717 liquor retail shops within the next two weeks,” the release added.
