At least four people were killed and more than 70 injured on Wednesday as protests demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule turned violent. Authorities imposed curfew in Leh, banning gatherings of over five people.

Protesters set ablaze the local BJP office and torched a vehicle, prompting police to use teargas and baton charges to disperse the mob. The Union administration enforced curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, prohibiting protests, rallies, and marches without prior approval.

The agitation, spearheaded by the youth wing of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), is part of its ongoing campaign for statehood and constitutional safeguards. LAB chairperson Thupstan Tswang said: “Some incidents led to acts of violence. During this, 2-3 young men were martyred for our cause. We will not let their sacrifices go to waste.”
