Virat Kohli pays emotional tribute to former U-19 teammate Amanpreet Singh Gill after his death at 36
Virat Kohli led tributes for former Under-19 teammate Amanpreet Singh Gill after the ex-Punjab pacer passed away at the age of 36 on Wednesday, May 6.
Gill, who represented Punjab cricket team in six first-class matches and claimed 11 wickets, was also a member of the Punjab Kings squad during the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. He later served on Punjab’s senior selection panel. The cause of his death remains unknown.
Kohli, who played alongside Gill at the Under-19 level, said he was shocked by the news and offered prayers to the bereaved family.
“Shocked and saddened to hear about Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti,” Kohli posted on X. Former India star Yuvraj Singh also remembered Gill fondly, calling him a dedicated cricketer who deeply loved the game.
“Deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. Shared the dressing room in our early days, he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Om Shanti,” Yuvraj wrote on X.
Punjab Kings too paid homage to their former player in a social media statement.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Amanpreet Singh Shergill, who proudly represented Punjab and was a part of the Punjab Kings family. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire cricketing fraternity,” the franchise said.
Gill represented India in five Youth ODIs and one Youth Test in 2007, where he dismissed former Thisara Perera. Despite his promise, he missed out on selection for the Kohli-led India squad that won the 2008 Under-19 World Cup.
