A court in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Tuesday sentenced 13 people to life imprisonment for the lynching of a man and his son during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April.

The fast-track court in Jangipur also ordered the state government to pay Rs 15 lakh as compensation to the victims’ family. The victims, Haragobinda Das (72) and his son Chandan Das (42), were attacked by a mob at their home in Jafrabad under the Samserganj police station area on April 12.

All 13 accused had been convicted by the court on Monday.

Murshidabad witnessed violent protests between April 8 and 12 after the Waqf (Amendment) Act was passed by Parliament, during which the father and son were killed.
