Delhi Man Critically Ill After Following AI Advice on HIV Prevention
A 45-year-old South Delhi man is in critical condition after consuming high-dose HIV preventive medication (PrEP) based on advice from a popular AI chat platform, highlighting the risks of self-diagnosis via artificial intelligence.
According to senior doctors at the private hospital where he is being treated, the man sought guidance from the AI tool after fearing potential HIV exposure. He reportedly followed the suggested regimen without consulting a qualified physician. Within 48 hours, he was admitted with acute kidney injury and severe jaundice, indicative of drug-induced liver toxicity.
Medical experts warned that AI platforms can “hallucinate” medical facts and fail to account for pre-existing conditions or contraindications. PrEP is effective under clinical supervision, requiring prior HIV-negative testing and renal function assessment—steps reportedly missed by the AI tool.
The case has intensified calls for regulation of generative AI in healthcare. Doctors stressed that while AI can assist in information gathering, it cannot replace professional diagnosis or prescription of schedule-H drugs.
Hospital authorities confirmed the incident is being reported to health regulators to evaluate the liability of the AI firm. Meanwhile, the patient continues to battle multi-organ failure, and his family has urged the public to exercise caution when using AI for medical guidance.
