Journey Through the Northeast: Where Nature, Culture, and Transformation Meet.

By Jyotiraditya M. Scindia

There are journeys that touch the mind, and there are those that stir the soul. My recent visit to Assam and Meghalaya was both—a journey of beauty, purpose, and inspiration.

The Northeast never ceases to move me. Its landscapes are breathtaking, its people even more so—gracious, resilient, and full of quiet strength. Every conversation, every smile reaffirmed my resolve to serve this extraordinary region with renewed commitment and compassion.

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India is scripting a new chapter for the Northeast—one of connectivity, inclusivity, and prosperity. What was once viewed as a remote frontier is now emerging as a vibrant hub of opportunity and innovation.

Sowing Prosperity in Meghalaya

My journey began in Upper Shillong, where I visited the Mushroom Development Centre—an inspiring example of rural transformation through science and skill. Established under the North Eastern Council, the centre now houses the newly inaugurated Shiitake Mushroom Production and Training Facility, producing nearly 1.5 lakh sawdust blocks each year.

Yet beyond statistics lies the human story—the proud farmers whose eyes reflect confidence and self-reliance. Their work embodies the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat—building livelihoods rooted in sustainability and dignity, a vision championed by our Prime Minister.

Where Clouds Embrace the Earth

In Sohra—Cherrapunji to the world—nature performs its own miracles. From my balcony, drifting clouds entered my room like soft messengers of peace.

But the most moving experience was the trek to the living root bridges of Rangthylliang. These breathtaking structures—woven patiently from the living roots of rubber fig trees—stand as living symbols of harmony between humanity and nature. Guided by local experts Morning Star and Laborious Syiem, I was reminded that true progress requires patience, balance, and respect for the environment.

Building the Future of Sustainable Tourism

At Sohra, I had the privilege of laying the foundation stone for the ₹233-crore Integrated Sohra Tourism Circuit under PM-DevINE. Conceived in partnership with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, this project envisions eco-parks, cultural precincts, and a world-class Sohra Experience Centre.

The goal is simple yet profound—to make tourism in Meghalaya a model of sustainability and empowerment, turning visitors into ambassadors of local prosperity.

Into the Heart of Time: Mawmluh Cave

Exploring the ancient Mawmluh Cave—where the Meghalayan Age began—was a humbling reminder of nature’s timeless artistry. Stretching over seven kilometres, the cave whispers stories written in stone and silence.

As I walked through its depths, guided by the legendary 81-year-old explorer Bob Ryan, I felt a quiet sense of connection—between the Earth’s endurance and India’s own steady rise as Vishwaguru. The journey ended with the ethereal music of the Shillong Chamber Choir—a perfect harmony of nature, culture, and spirit.

A New Dawn in Assam

In Guwahati, I inaugurated the North Eastern Science and Technology (NEST) Cluster at IIT Guwahati and launched projects worth ₹635 crore—spanning education, industry, bridges, and community tourism. The NEST Cluster will serve as a nucleus for research and innovation, linking young minds to new opportunities in science, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth.

These are not mere projects—they are promises fulfilled, reflecting our government’s steadfast focus on transforming the Northeast into a powerhouse of progress and pride.

From Frontier to Future

Today, the Northeast stands at the threshold of a new era. With expanding air routes, highways, and digital corridors, it is fast becoming India’s gateway to Southeast Asia—fulfilling the Prime Minister’s vision of Act East, Act Fast, Act First.

The eight states of this region—our Ashtalakshmi—are jewels in India’s crown, each radiating its unique light of culture and resilience. As we preserve and promote these treasures, we strengthen not only the Northeast but the very soul of a New Bharat—prosperous, inclusive, and deeply rooted in its heritage.
