White House Slams Nobel Committee After Trump Overlooked; Maria Corina Machado Wins 2025 Peace Prize.
The White House criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee after it awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Corina Machado, Venezuela’s opposition leader, instead of U.S. President Donald Trump, who had long claimed he deserved recognition for brokering peace deals and ending “eight wars.” Officials accused the committee of placing “politics over peace.”
Machado, 58, widely known as Venezuela’s “Iron Lady,” was recognized for her “tireless work in promoting democratic rights” and her “struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” Despite facing imprisonment, threats, and political persecution under President Nicolás Maduro, she has remained in Venezuela, leading the pro-democracy movement. Machado also featured on Time Magazine’s 2025 ‘100 Most Influential People’ list.
White House spokesperson Steven Cheung praised Trump’s record, saying,
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
Ahead of the announcement, Trump criticized former President Barack Obama, claiming he received the Nobel Peace Prize “for doing nothing” and for “destroying our country.” Trump highlighted his role in ending conflicts, including the May India-Pakistan tensions, while Indian authorities maintained there was no third-party intervention.
While Pakistan’s leaders publicly supported Trump’s Nobel consideration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the U.S. President and welcomed his efforts in resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Nobel Committee described Machado as a “courageous and steadfast advocate for peace,” emphasizing her commitment to democracy and human rights under authoritarian rule. Her recognition underscores the global importance of democratic activism and peaceful political change.
