Who are Princess Gauravi Kumari and Sawai Padmanabh Singh? Meet the Jaipur royals who debuted at Met Gala
Princess Gauravi Kumari and Sawai Padmanabh Singh turned heads at their Met Gala debut with looks rooted in Rajasthani heritage, sparking widespread curiosity about the Jaipur royals after their red-carpet appearance went viral.
The royal siblings used fashion’s biggest night to spotlight Rajasthan’s rich craftsmanship and legacy, blending regal tradition with contemporary design.
Who is Princess Gauravi Kumari?
Princess Gauravi Kumari is the daughter of Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari and belongs to Jaipur’s erstwhile royal family. She is also the great-granddaughter of the iconic Maharani Gayatri Devi.
Reflecting on the women in her family in an earlier interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Gauravi said: “I come from a household of enigmatic women — from Maharani Gayatri Devi to my grandmother Rajmata Padmini Devi of Jaipur to my mother Princess Diya Kumari.”
She studied at Mayo College Girls’ School before pursuing higher education at New York University, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Professionally, she manages the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation and is also co-founder of The PDKF Store, which promotes traditional Indian craftsmanship.
Known for her understated elegance and minimal makeup aesthetic, Gauravi stayed true to her signature style at the Met Gala.
For the event, she wore a custom Prabal Gurung gown that incorporated her grandmother Maharani Gayatri Devi’s pink chiffon sari into the design, accessorised with pearls and uncut Jaipur diamonds.
“It was important that my grandmother’s sari was not just a source of inspiration, but physically incorporated into the garment in a meaningful way,” she told Vogue India.
Who is Sawai Padmanabh Singh?
Sawai Padmanabh Singh, popularly known as Pacho among family and friends, is the titular head of Jaipur’s royal family.
Like many of his ancestors, he is an accomplished polo player and has represented India internationally, earning recognition in the sport.
Beyond polo, Padmanabh is actively involved in philanthropy, particularly initiatives focused on girls’ education, scholarships and digital literacy.
He is also widely regarded as a modern style icon, known for blending traditional royal aesthetics with contemporary tailoring.
At the Met Gala, Padmanabh wore a striking velvet Phulghar coat designed by Prabal Gurung.
The richly embroidered garment featured intricate aari and zardozi work that reportedly took more than 600 hours to complete.
“The idea was to bring Rajasthani craftsmanship to the forefront in a way that felt authentic to me,” he told Vogue India.
“It brings together a more maximal, expressive approach while remaining deeply rooted in Rajasthani tradition.”
Their Met Gala debut marked more than just a fashion moment — it was a global showcase of Jaipur’s royal heritage and craftsmanship on one of the world’s biggest cultural stages.
